What is the talent you are being sponsored for?
How long have you being doing it for? How did you get started?
It’s been 10 years, I used to be a competitive figure skater for 5 years, but then I went through a total Tom Boy phase, so I tried my luck at surfing. No one in my immediate family surfs, but my uncle had left some of his old boards at our house. My parents have always been extremely supportive of whatever I want to do. I was ten and had no clue where to go or what I needed, so my dad packed up three boards in our car and drove me to Trestles (he had heard that people surfed there). He carried all three boards down and said, “Go for it! I’ll be right here watching on the beach.” I took the smallest board which had a smidgen of wax on it, made it out about ten feet, tripped on a rock, skinned my knee, and came in. And that was my first taste of surfing.
I am 21 years old and an English Education major at Cal State Long Beach. I love school and hope to teach English abroad in the future. Surfing has opened my eyes to life changing experiences, allowing me to travel around the world and meet amazing friends and encounter new cultures. I have been very blessed with beautiful and supportive parents who have encouraged my love for traveling and school.
I love the outdoors. Living in southern California, I have been very blessed to be so close to the ocean and ample surfing spots. My mother’s family is from Hawaii and Samoa so the ocean has always been a big part of my life. I grew up with it and surfing allows me to appreciate its beauty and all it has to offer.
When I am not surfing, I am…
When I am not surfing, I am hiking, reading, studying, traveling, or hanging out with friends.
What are three things you like about La Isla?
I am very grateful for La Isla for taking an interest in me, and supporting me. I feel honored to represent their beautiful line of clothing. I find their style is sophisticated and fresh. I believe they are a unique brand that successfully combines an island vibe with class.
What is the last thing (book, article, publication) you read and why?
I just finished reading Carlos Bulosan’s short story, “The Life and Death of a Filipino in America” for a literature class at school. It was excellent!
Is there anything you would like the world to know about you?
I am in love with Harry Potter!
What are the three most important things to you in your life?
My family, education, and traveling.
Name three people you admire the most and why?
My mother and father for sure, I would not be where I am today without them. They both are the hardest working people I know. My father has always been an inspiration, and I am so grateful for his encouragement to get out and experience the world.
My mother is so kind; she is always willing to help. I admire the endless amounts of love that never fails to pour from her heart. The third person is actually someone I have met very recently, my professor from school, Dr. Jordan Yamaji Smith. He is absolutely brilliant! His energy and enthusiasm always encourage me to try my best. I admire his hard work and dedication.
